| The Afghan stamps of 1989 have only a slight resemblance to the original artworks that have inspired them. In the case of this stamp, the link is particularly weak. The stamp appears to be based on folio 20 verso of Alfonso X's Libros del Axedrez, Dados et Tablas. The original image has 4 soldiers playing chess. Whereas the bottom two soldiers (sitting) in the original artwork are the inspiration for the 4AFS stamp earlier in this set, the upper two soldiers (standing) in the original artwork (see their hand gestures) have become the basis for this stamp (45 AFS). The link to the original artwork is, of course, tenuous. There does not, however, appear to be a better matching original artwork in Alfonso X's Libros del Axedrez, Dados et Tablas. |
